Fast Five Drives into the Box Office

The ultimate Fast and the Furious cast is back for another round, along with a couple forgettable films.

Fast Five

Hit Factor: The cast from most of the Fast and Furious, plus The Rock. Surprising, 83% tomatometer so far.
Flop Factor: A fifth in the series? Can it really be that good?

Hoodwinked Too: Hood vs. Evil
Hit Factor: it's a sequel... so someone thought it would make money.
Flop Factor: I had no intentions on seeing the first one... Another animated movie called, Rio is doing well at the box office.

Prom
Hit Factor: Low budget
Flop Factor: No major (or recognizable) stars.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night
Hit Factor: Built in audience.
Flop Factor: Built in audience maybe too small, and most people probably wouldn't pay to see this in theaters.

Rio Hangs on to the Top of the Box Office

...For the second week in a row, beating out Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family. Rio has grossed $81 million so far, and already close to $300 million worldwide. This film from Tyler Perry's Madea franchise, slipped a little from previous outings, but still remained on the south end of analysts' predictions.

Water For Elephants did a bit better than expected, with just above $17 million, despite mediocre reviews. As for Scream 4, it looks like that franchise is dead, as it dropped more than 60% this weekend, proving to be a big disappointment for a Scream film (I don't see how they can green light another one). It also looks like that other scary film Insidious (with barely any marketing and budget) is in good standing to make more than Scream 4.

Madea vs Water for Elephants

A couple new movies hit theaters this weekend and also some African Cats get a small release.

Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family
Hit Factor: Tyler Perry seems to hit his target audience well.
Flop Factor: Not many people outside the target audience want to see it.

Water for Elephants
Hit Factor: Trailer looks inviting... cool visual style.
Flop Factor: Story seems low key for a big budget film.

African Cats
Hit Factor: Awe, cats.
Flop Factor: "You fill this one in."

Rio Takes Top of Box Office

...While Scream 4 underwhelmed.

The Fox animated movie Rio, easily took the top spot this weekend garnering about $40 million, a little bit less than expected. Scream 4, on the other hand, disappointed with an $18 million debut... showing signs that this franchise should have been slashed at the third one.

On a side note, this will be an interesting year in predicting movies, as their is much competition from a lot of sequels which are way past their (ala Scream 4) The good news is that Scream 4 only cost $40 million.

Rio vs Scream 4

It looks like a big weekend ahead as two big new movies open this weekend, making it tough to guess which one will come out on top.

Rio

Hit Factor: Already made over $50 million in foreign box office during it's opening weekend.
Flop Factor: Maybe not up to par with Pixar or Dreamworks animation.

Scream 4
Hit Factor: It's been Eleven years since the last Scream, and fans want to be scared again.
Flop Factor: The trailer doesn't do anything for me... and Eleven years is a long time for an "okay" franchise.

The Conspirator
Hit Factor: Robert Redford directing
Flop Factor: Robert Redford's last movie, Lions for Lambs, didn't do well at all.

Hop Tops Second Week at the Box Office

Yes, that animated Easter bunny movie, Hop, easily took the top spot this weekend as the new-coming comedies, Arthur and Your Highness majorly disappointed (majorly, as in flop potential if it next weekend doesn't hold up well either) at the box office. Probably because of bad reviews and having the same target audience. Even the second week of Insidious (with no major actors) beat out the star studded Your Highness!!! These two comedies may also have the potential to make my flops of 2011 so far list.

As for the two other movies, Hanna and Soul Surfer, they made pretty much what was expected... so they're in the clear.

Arthur vs Your Highness

Four new movies hit theaters this weekend, with two of them hitting the same target audience.

Arthur
Hit Factor: Russell Brand has a small following.
Flop Factor: Reviews so far have been harsh.

Your Highness
Hit Factor: Created a lot of online buzz when the trailer first came out.
Flop Factor: Also, not fairing to well in the reviews department.

Hanna

Hit Factor: Offbeat film about a girl assassin... generally positive reviews, and The Chemical Brothers scoring the film.
Flop Factor: Probably doesn't appeal to a wide audience.

Soul Surfer

Hit Factor: based on an inspiring true story.
Flop Factor: Reviews have been mediocre so far.

Hop Leaps to the Top of the Box Office

The Easter friendly animated movie, Hop, managed to successfully hop, jump, leap, bounce, to the top of the box office this weekend with about $38 million, despite it's tepid reviews. Source Code came in second with about $15 million, more or less where analysts predicted. And that cheapo-scary movie, Insidious, came in third with about $13 million.

As for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch, it has managed to slide down almost 70% from last weekend, going from disappointment to flop territory.
