Dolphin Tale Takes Box Office Throne Away From The Lion King

In what is a rather weak and unusual weekend at the movies, Dolphin Tale managed to hit the number one spot in it's second week of release with about $14.2 million. The Lion King 3D slipped to number 3, behind Moneyball, primarily because The Lion King is hitting the Blu-ray market this week.

As for the newcomers, 50/50 managed to best them all, but with a fourth place finish, just above $8.8 million. While the somewhat limited, somewhat wide released film (just over 1000 theaters) Courageous, unexpectedly grabbed up 5th place, trailing 50/50 only by about $50 thousand. It is somewhat odd that a small run movie is doing pretty well, despite it's mediocre reviews. Well, it is marketed well to the Christian market, where most of it's money is coming from.

Dream House is the third newcomer that is also neck and neck (and neck) with those other two, but since it is rumored to cost about $50 million, this will most likely flop... also because it's getting a 5% on rottentomatoes and also the director and actors won't do press for it. Ouch!

As for the Anna Faris comedy What's Your Number?-- 8th place. I like Anna Faris, but this movie did have very underwhelming marketing and it also didn't help that it looked like every other mediocre Rom-com on the market.
