Snow White and the Huntsman vs Men In Black 3

A fairy tale gets a Grimm remake as Snow White and the Huntsman battles the Men In Black and The Avengers.

Snow White and the Huntsman
Hit Factor: It looks cool, Charlize Theron.
Flop Factor: Needs strong word of mouth for this to be a success, and early world of mouth has been mediocre at best.

Men In Black 3 Beats The Avengers

Finally, a new movie managed to remove The Avengers at the top spot at the box office.  And that movie is the Will Smith vehicle Men In Black 3, which grossed about $55 million. Sony is expecting $70 million over the full Memorial Day Weekend.  However, the box office is actually down from last year by about 30% when The Hangover 2 made $86 million from Friday to Sunday.

Despite it's second place finish, The Avengers is up to $514 million, meaning it is sitting just behind The Dark Knight's $533 million for third place on the all time domestic list.  It has also made $1.3 billion worldwide, sitting right behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's $1.33 billion on the all time list.  So, it should move into third place on both fronts soon.

Oh yeah, and then there's that movie Battleship, which dropped almost 60% this weekend to $10.8 million, which despite it's decent overseas gross, will still become a big loss for Universal.

Men In Black 3 vs The Avengers

Men In Black 3 takes on The Avengers this Memorial Day Weekend.

Men In Black 3
Hit Factor: The Avengers will have been playing in theaters for 4 weeks... The MIB Franchise has already made over $1 Billion worldwide.  Will Smith's name carries pretty well overseas.
Flop Factor: They have to substantially make up for the awful Men In Black 2 (did I mention awful?).  The Men In Black 3 trailer doesn't look too good either.

Chernobyl Diaries
Hit Factor: Honestly, there's not much else to see in theaters after Men In Black 3 and watching The Avengers again.
Flop Factor: I would probably watch The Avengers again, than see a movie that looks like a straight to DVD flick.

The Avengers Sinks Battleship

The Avengers easily took the top spot in it's third weekend with about $55 million "Avengers, you sunk my Battleship (yes, everyone is using this pun)."  The Avengers is now the highest grossing movie domestically ($457 million) and internationally ($723 million) of 2012, with a worldwide total pushing towards the $1.2 billion mark.  It sits in fourth place on the all-time list, right behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.

The sunken Battleship's debut at $25 million may prove a loss for Universal, despite collecting a modest $215 million overseas in it's debut a couple months ago.  Battleship reportedly cost $209 million to make.

Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator put up a mediocre $17 million domestically against it's $65 million budget, but overseas it managed to laugh up $30 million, so a decent profit may be in waiting.

As for the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp flick Dark Shadows, it's pretty much flopping as it dropped almost 60% this weekend.

The Avengers Overshadows Dark Shadows

The Avengers easily took the top spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row, with about $103 million, making it the highest second weekend for any movie and also, the only movie to have a second weekend north of $100 million. The Avengers should also surpass The Hunger Games' $387 million by Monday or Tuesday, to become the highest grossing movie domestically.

In Worldy Avenger news, it has passed $1 Billion mark, and is now the highest grossing superhero movie of all time, just surpassing The Dark Knight's $1,001.9 million.

As for the Johnny Depp slash Tim Burton flick, Dark Shadows, it managed to pick up only $29 million, a bit of a disappointment, really.

Only one new movie dares to go up against The Avengers.

Box Office Flops of 2012... So Far

So it's getting harder and harder for movies to flop since the rise in Foreign box office figures. Still, there are a few movies where that luxury doesn't help too much... and thus, they become disappointments. Usually, a movie studio and distributor well get back around 50 - 60% of the total gross of the movie, while the rest will go to the exhibitors. So, most movies grosses need to at least double the budget in order for a real profit.  This is also not taking into consideration marketing and advertising costs.

The Avengers destroyed the weekend box office with an Earth shattering $200.3 million, breaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2's $169.2 million... Thus, setting the new record as the biggest box office opening for a move, ever, domestically.  Yes, that's over $200 million in 3 DAYS!

Will The Dark Knight Rises beat this record?

We'll have to find out come July.
