Pixar's Brave Hits the Bullseye

Pixar's Brave easily took the top spot ($66.7 million) at the box office this weekend.  While Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter had to settle for third place ($16.5 million), making it tough for it to surpass it's reported $69 million budget..

Madagascar 3 scored second place ($20.2 million), resulting in a big win for animated family films as Brave and Madagascar 3 take the top two spots.

Pixar's Brave Aims For Box Office Gold

A few new movies hit theaters this weekend.

Brave
Hit Factor: Pixar is a hit making factory, even their least acclaimed film, Cars 2, made over $550 million worldwide.
Flop Factor: It doesn't seem as original when pitted up with the Pixar classics... or maybe Dreamworks has finally caught up.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Hit Factor: Abraham Lincoln kicking ass, Vampire-ass.
Flop Factor: Even though I'd see this film, not sure if I'll pay to see it in theaters.

Seeking a Friend For the End of the World
Hit Factor: Cute, Indie Dramedy with big actors vibe.
Flop Factor: Needs heavy word of mouth for this movie to make it this Summer.

Rock of Ages and That's My Boy Flop

Madagascar 3 remained at the top spot this weekend (with $35.5 million) as newcomers the star-studded musical, Rock of Ages ($15.1 million), and Adam Sandler's That's My Boy ($13 million), failed to find an audience.

In fact, even with a 60% drop (to $20 million), Prometheus still beat both of them for second place. The steep decline of Prometheus may deter plans for a sequel, but being second place two weeks in a role doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Making it worse for That's My Boy, is that it couldn't even grasp fourth place, which was snatched up by Snow White and the Huntsman ($13.8 million), which is in it's third week. That's My Boy is Adam Sandler's weakest comedy debut in 8 years.

Both Rock of Ages and That's My Boy have a pretty sizeable budget, and studios are hoping for a strong overseas market to keep them out of the red. However, comedies don't usually fare well overseas, so we could possibly be looking at movies making the Flop list soon.

Rock of Ages
Hit Factor: Big ensemble cast.
Flop Factor: Early reviews haven't been too positive.

That's My Boy

Madagascar 3 Tops Prometheus

After weeks of mediocre releases since The Avengers kicked off the Summer movie season, Madagascar 3 ($60.4 million) and Prometheus ($50 million) managed to debut with a healthy June weekend.  Madagascar 3 is helped by it's short running time (1 and a half hours) and its over 4200 theater count compared to Prometheus' 3300.  Prometheus actually beat Madagascar 3 per screen average ($14,723 vs $14,173).

In other news, The Avengers hit the $1.4 billion mark worldwide.

Prometheus vs Madagascar 3

A Sci-Fi thriller battles Cartoon animals this weekend at the box office.

Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted
Hit Factor: Third in a popular kids franchise... No other movie for the young-uns out.

Snow White & the Huntsman Takes the Throne

The Charlize Theron Queened Snow White movie, featuring Bella Swan and Thor easily took the top spot at the box office this weekend with about $56 million (making much more than anticipated).  This also easily beats the $18.2 million from Julia Roberts' comedy take on the Snow White genre (Mirror Mirror), which came out earlier this year. In fact, Mirror Mirror made only $62.5 million in it's total domestic run, a feat in which Snow White & the Huntsman will surpass in another day or so.

Men In Black 3 had to settle for second with $29 million, making it tough to match it's $225 million budget.  However, with the help of the overseas market, this Will Smith adventure grossed $78.6 million, pushing its worldwide total to $387 million so far.

The Avengers continues to climb the all-time charts as it is now the third highest grossing movie domestically ($552.7 million) and also third highest grossing movie world wide ($1.355 billion), now only behind James Cameron's Avatar and Titanic on both fronts.
