Argo Beats Cloud Atlas and other New Movies

The big budget Arthouse film Cloud Atlas couldn't take the number one and two spot this weekend as holdovers Argo and Hotel Transylvania took claim.  Though Cloud Atlas had the highest screen average in the top ten, it's 3 hour running time and mediocre Cinema Score (C+) deterred movie goers.  Though possibly it could have legs, this opening weekend does not bode well for the $102 million flick.

As for the other films that came out this weekend, they pretty much all failed... with Silent Hill: Revelation coming in 6th with $8 million, Fun Size in 10th with $4 million and Chasing Mavericks in 12th with $2.2 million.

In other news, the new James Bond flick, Skyfall, debuted overseas to the tune of $77.7 million... which is pretty damn good.

Cloud Atlas vs Silent Hill 2 vs Chasing Mavericks vs Fun Size

Cloud Atlas and other films hit theaters this weekend.

Cloud Atlas
Hit Factor: Wachowski's are visionary. It looks like a big budget risk, with an idea that's different.
Flop Factor: As a result, target audience for this film is very narrow, in relation to it's huge budget.

Silent Hil: Revelation
Hit Factor: This is the time of year to release scary films.
Flop Factor: Buzz on this film has been very low, so probably not even close to Paranormal Activity expectations.

Chasing Mavericks
Hit Factor: Could be good.
Flop Factor: For some reason I thought it was a documentary.

Fun Size
Hit Factor: Probably really low budget.
Flop Factor: Didn't laugh once during the trailer.

Paranormal Activity 4 Scares Up the Box Office

The fourth installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise easily took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $30.2 million. However, the franchise is showing some signs of fatigue as Paranormal Activity 2 and 3 debuted to the tune of $40.7 million and $52.6 million respectively.  Despite this fact, the filmmakers are laughing all the way to the bank as this 4th installment only cost $5 million to make, and is still doing well overseas. In fact, Paranormal Activity 4's weekend gross is more than twice as much the budget of all the Paranormal Activity's added together. So it should be no surprise as Paranormal Activity 5 has just been greenlit.

Paranormal Activity 4 vs Alex Cross

A couple new movies hit theaters this weekend, battling against Taken 2 and Argo.

Paranormal Activity 4
Hit Factor: These movies don't cost that much, and thus, do exceedingly well.
Flop Factor: Every sequel to the Paranormal franchise has made less than it's predecessor.

Alex Cross
Hit Factor: Based off the popular books-turned-into-movies: Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls.
Flop Factor: Even though he's in Star Trek, I'm still on the fence about Madea playing a serious leading role.

Taken 2 Holds on to Second Weekend

Yup, the Liam Neeson ass-kicking flick, Taken 2, managed to squeeze out a first place finish for the second weekend in a row with about $22.5 million. It has now made $86.8 million domestically and just about $220 million worldwide.  The first Taken made $226.8 million worldwide in it's entirety... so it's safe to say Taken 2 will surpass that.

Ben Affleck's retro-political-thriller, Argo, came in a close second with just above $20 million, aided by strong positive reviews.  And just behind that, the horror flick, Sinister, did way above expectations with an $18 million debut for a third place finish.

Argo vs Taken 2

A few new movies hit theaters this October Weekend.

Argo
Hit Factor: Strong early reviews, looks good. Oscar bait.
Flop Factor:  Most movie goers would rather opp for Taken 2 than a critically acclaimed period drama.

Here Comes The Boom
Hit Factor: For some reason Kevin James' family comedies do well.
Flop Factor: This does not interest me at all.

Seven Psychopaths
Hit Factor: Positve early reviews (95% tomatometer so far)
Flop Factor: Needs to rely on word of mouth rather than real marketing, as there really isn't any.

Sinister
Hit Factor: Decent early reviews for a horror flick.
Flop Factor: Are all horror movies the same lately?

Taken 2 Crushes the Box Office

Liam Neeson's ass-kicking flick Taken 2, easily took down the box office this weekend with $50 million, despite very, very bad reviews.  In other words, look out for a Taken 3. Taken 2 has also the highest debut in October for a PG-13 film.

Hotel Transylvania managed a strong second place with $26.4 million, and is partly the reason why Tim Burton's critically praised Frankenweenie only managed to muster up $11.5 million for a fifth place finish despite all of Disney's efforts.

So far, October is looking pretty strong compared to September.

Frankenweenie vs Taken 2

A few new movies open this October weekend.

Frankenweenie
Hit Factor: It looks good.
Flop Factor: Hotel Transylvania is doing really well.  ParaNorman wasn't exactly the huge success they were expecting.

Taken 2
Hit Factor: Liam Neeson back kicking ass.
Flop Factor: Reviews so far have been very bad.

Pitch Perfect
Hit Factor: Has some early positive buzz.
Flop Factor: Don't know if that is enough to carry in a wide release.
