Star Trek Into Darkness, Treks Out a First Place Finish

Star Trek Into Darkness easily claimed the top spot this weekend with about $70.6 million, $84.1 million since it's release Thursday.  Overseas, it grossed $40 million, to bring it's current worldwide total to $164.6 million.  Despite it's big opening, Into Darkness' debut is a bit shy of the first Star Trek's $75.2 million set back in 2009.

Iron Man 3 ($35.2 million) and The Great Gatsby ($23.4 million) rounded out the top three.  Iron Man 3 added another $40 million overseas, and, since last week, has passed the $1 billion mark worldwide.  It is currently the 15th highest grossing movie of all time with about $1.036 billion. As for The Great Gatsby, it bested Star Trek and Iron Man overseas, with about $42.1 million.
