Despicable Me 2 Holds On to the Top Spot

Despicable Me 2 just barely held on to the top spot for the second weekend in a row ($44.8 million) as Grown Ups 2 ($42.5 million) and Pacific Rim ($38.3 million) trail right behind.

Pacific Rim looked like it was going to pull ahead late last week as the reviews for the film have been mostly positive and it took in a decent Thursday night start. However, that since has tapered off over the course of the weekend.  All things considered, $38.3 million isn't a bad start, but considering Pacific Rim reportedly cost $190 million to make, means a giant uphill battle.  On the plus side, this movie may do well overseas, as it has already made $53 million.

What's more surprising is despite it's horrid reviews (7% tomatometer), Grown Ups 2 managed a strong second place (even $2 million more than the first Grown Ups).  This is probably one of the highest debuting worst reviewed movies of all time.

As for The Lone Ranger, Disney's hopes for it having some sort of legs are dashed as it dropped over 60% this weekend. Largely due to media dissing it from the start.  So expect Disney to make a huge write off... and more unwarranted sequels for Alice in Wonderland and Pirates of Caribbean.
