The Conjuring Scares Up the Box Office

The Conjuring scared the pants off of movie goers this weekend as it debuted at the top spot of the box office. It's $41.5 million take is a lot more than many expected.

As for the other newcomers, well... they pretty much underperformed.  Turbo and Red 2 made $21.5 million and $18.5 million respectively.  Turbo's lackluster debut is also one of Dreamworks Animtation's lowest.  But, there might be some light ahead overseas, as it made $22.6 million in just 25% of the marketplace. As for Red 2, it's $18.5 million is just short of the original Red's $21.7 million.

Now, I guess I cannot, not, talk about the elephant in the room, which is R.I.P.D. It opened in 7th place with $12.8 million... and will probably go one the list as one of 2013's flops. Unless, of course, it magically makes a lot of money overseas. What's interesting to note here, is that the director of R.I.P.D., Robert Schwentke, directed the first Red movie.

And don't count out Pacific Rim weak domestic performance ($16 million this weekend) just yet, as the overseas market is holding strong. It grossed $34.8 million and already has a worldwide total of $178.5 million.
