The World's End vs Mortal Instruments vs You're Next

A few new movies hit theaters this late August weekend.

The World's End
Hit Factor: The team behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are back!
Flop Factor: It's a very niche audience.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
Hit Factor: Based off a book... so it has some built in fan base.
Flop Factor: Looks like a forgettable film, like that Beautiful Creatures movie that came out earlier this year.

You're Next
Hit Factor: Horror movies are cheap.
Flop Factor: Doesn't quite have the buzz as The Conjuring did before it was released.

The Butler Tops the Box Office

The positively reviewed film, The Butler, easily took the box office this weekend ($25 million), while the other newcomers, Kick-Ass 2, Jobs, and Paranoia underwhelmed ($13.6 million, $6.7 million and $3.5 million, respectively).  The good news, for these underwhelming films (if there is any), is that they weren't that expensive to produce.

The comedy, We're the Millers is holding on strong, as it dropped just over 30% from last weekend to take 2nd place, and may very well be the only movie of August to pass the $100 million mark (or get close to it).

All in all, Summer seems to be coming to a close as the box office is becoming less than Kick Ass (yes, pun... bam!).

Kick Ass 2 vs Paranoia vs The Butler vs Jobs

A bunch of new movies hit theaters this weekend in August.

Kick Ass 2
Hit Factor: It probably didn't cost as much.
Flop Factor: I found the original intriguing but slightly underwhelming.

Paranoia
Hit Factor: Harrison Ford vs Gary Oldman
Flop Factor: Looks like something you'd watch just because it's on TV.

The Butler
Hit Factor: It has the Oprah bump.
Flop Factor: Are people ready to get serious as the Summer Movie season comes to close.

jOBS
Hit Factor: Interesting to see the rise of Apple.
Flop Factor: I think we're all waiting for Aaron Sorkin's version.

Elysium Takes the Top Spot

In a crowded weekend at the movies, the Matt Damon and director Neill Blomkamp Sci-Fi pic, Elysium, took the top spot at the box office ($30.4 million).  Though it debuted a bit lower than expected, it's still off to a decent start.

We're the Millers took in $26.7 million for a very good second place, especially considering this movie only cost $37 million.

As for Disney's Planes, it underwhelmed a bit ($22.5 million), mostly because of the crowded family movie market, and the fact that it looks bad.  However, it's budget is a fraction of most animated movies ($50 million). So, expect this movie to be a moderate success.

The fourth movie to hit theaters this weekend, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, well... may need a little help getting a profit as it made $14.6 million against it's $90 million budget.

Elysium vs Planes vs We're The Millers vs Percy Jackson 2

A bunch of new movies hit theaters this August weekend.

Elysium
Hit Factor: District 9 was a great movie
Flop Factor: While early reviews are good, it's not as grand as District 9.

Planes
Hit Factor: It looks like Cars.
Flop Factor: Pixar not involved, and it's a Cars rip off that was supposed to be straight-to-video.

We're The Millers
Hit Factor: No other adult comedy out.
Flop Factor: The trailer doesn't really grab you or make you laugh.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
Hit Factor: The first film showed some fan following.
Flop Factor: I'm not sure that following is big enough to warrant a sequel.

2 Guns Tops the Box Office

The Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg action comedy flick 2 Guns took the top spot at the box office this weekend ($27.4 million). The Smurfs 2 had to settle for a mediocre 3rd place finish ($18.2 million)... especially compared to the first Smurfs movie's $35.6 million take on opening weekend two years ago.  However, all is not lost for the blue fellers, as it has already grossed $52.5 million overseas.

Coming in second place was The Wolverine ($21.7 million).  Despite the media calling it a flop, it has grossed $95 million in the states, and has already taken in $160.2 million overseas for a worldwide total of $255.2 million.

In other news, Despicable Me 2 passed the $700 million mark worldwide ($713.7 million).

Hit Factor: Denzel Washington movies tend to do well.
Flop Factor: He's kinda been playing the same character for a while now.

The Smurfs 2
