Transformers 4 Crushes the Box Office

Yup, Transformers: Age of Extinction (a critic proof film) debuted to a tune of $100 million, which makes it the biggest debut of the 2014. And it is slightly bigger than Dark of the Moon's $97.9 million.  Worldwide, it has already grossed $301 million… and looking on pace to be the first movie of 2014 to cross the $1billion mark.

Think Like a Man Too vs Jersey Boys vs 22 Jump Street vs How to Train Your Dragon 2

Can 22 Jump Street hold on as a couple new movies open this June weekend?

Think Like a Man Too
Hit Factor: The first one did reasonably well… in-between big Summer movie launches.
Flop Factor: Does this fit in a crowded Summer marketplace.

Jersey Boys
Hit Factor: Clint Eastwood directing.
Flop Factor: Doesn't seem like a Summer spectacle.  Basically a movie about a boy band.

22 Jump Street's Surprise Box Office Domination

In the battle of the sequels, 22 Jump Street's $60 million debut edged out How to Train Your Dragon 2's $50 million.  A move, which many were expecting, to be reversed.  Both movies are getting positive reviews, so expect strong holdovers through next weekend.

In other news, last weekends number one, The Fault in our Stars, dropped huge numbers (67%), to 5th place… largely due to the fact most of the book's fan-based audience saw it last weekend.

A couple of new movies hit theaters this weekend, looking to kick up the June box office.

How to Train Your Dragon 2
Hit Factor: The first one was great and has since amassed a strong following.
Flop Factor: Is the first one a fluke… or does Dreamworks really have another massive franchise on it's hands?

22 Jump Street
Hit Factor: Again, the first film was unexpectedly great.
Flop Factor: Will it be more of the same jokes… or actually be as fresh as the first one?

The Fault in Our Stars Dominates Box Office

The Fault in Our Stars easily topped the box office this weekend ($48.2 million) due to a large female audience (82% of moviegoers. 79% were under the age of 25(statistics, yay!)).

Tom Cruise's positively reviewed Sci-Fi flick Edge of Tomorrow took in $29.1 million which was pretty much what analysts were expecting.  However, it's not spectacular news because it's budget is reported to be $178 million.

Maleficent is Magnificent at the Box Office

I see what you did there…

Disney's big risk film of 2014, Maleficent, debuted to a strong $70 million this weekend, easily taking the top spot.

X-Men: Days of Future Past came in second ($32.6 million), dropping just above 60% from last weekend.  It so far, has just surpassed the $500 million mark worldwide, which makes it the highest grossing X-Men film.

Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West mustered up an okay $17.1 million, which is well short of the Ted-spectations' $54.5 million set a couple of years ago.
