Guardians of the Galaxy vs Get On Up vs Lucy

Does Marvel have another superhero franchise on it's hands?

Guardians of the Galaxy
Hit Factor: Positive early reviews (93% Tomatometer)… it's connected to Marvel Universe.
Flop Factor: Maybe too niche and geek for a massive audience.

Get On Up
Hit Factor: Also getting positive early reviews (86% Tomatometer).
Flop Factor: No major pull.

Lucy Out-Muscle's Hercules

It turns out that Dwayne Johnson's demigod powers were no match for Scarlet Johansson's 100% brain  power as Lucy made an astounding $44 million at the box office this weekend. Hercules, did however, manage to garner a decent $29 million for a second place finish. This first place finish for Lucy bodes well for Johansson, and for Marvel, as they are speculative of making a Black Widow film.

In other news, Transformers: Age of Extinction is edging closer to the $1 billion mark as it now has made $966 million worldwide.

Hercules vs Lucy vs Dawn of the Apes

A couple of new movies hit theaters looking to dethrone Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Hercules
Hit Factor: Box office lull.
Flop Factor: "Hercules! Hercules! Hercules!" - I just think of Eddie Murphy saying those lines.

Lucy
Hit Factor: Looks cool.
Flop Factor: Plot is logically dumb. Seriously, enough with the 10% ideology… Everyone knows that's not true (well, i guess not everyone).

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Easily Takes Second Weekend

Newcomers The Purge Anarchy ($28.4 million), Planes: Fire & Rescue ($18 million) and Sex Tape ($15 million) couldn't dethrone Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' second weekend ($36 million).

In fact, all three newcomers underwhelmed just a little bit, as Anarchy's debut was short of the $34.1 million debut of the original, and Fire & Rescue's debut was short of the $22 million debut of it's original… and well, Sex Tape got nowhere near recent R rated comedy flicks, 22 Jump Street ($57.1 million), Neighbors ($49 million), Tammy ($21.6 million) and what it'll be most compared to, Bad Teacher ($31.6 million).

In other news, Transformers: Age of Extinction is all but extinct as it has now climbed to $886 million worldwide getting ever so closer to the $1 billion mark.

Sex Tape vs Planes 2 vs The Purge 2 vs Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Can Dawn of the Planet of the Apes stay on top of the box office this weekend as a bunch of new movies hit theaters?

Planes: Fire and Rescue
Hit Factor: There is not much in the way of family oriented competition.
Flop Factor: It's a sequel to a movie that was a knock off of Cars.

Sex Tape
Hit Factor: R rated comedy's have done reasonably well this year (Neighbors, 22 Jump Street).
Flop Factor: However, this one doesn't really look that funny.

The Purge: Anarchy
Hit Factor: The first one did exceptionally well (on opening weekend).
Flop Factor: Could this be the new Horror style?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Easily Top Box Office

Yes, the Apes reboot sequel crushed the competition this weekend ($73 million).  This is considerably higher than the $54.8 million that Rise of the Planet of the Apes took on it's opening weekend.  All things considered, this is shaping up to be a good summer for Fox as they also distributed The Fault in our Stars ($237 million worldwide) and X-Men: Days of Future Past ($731 million worldwide).

Speaking of X-Men, though, it's short-lived spot as the biggest movie of the year has come to fruition this week as Transformers: Age of Extinction has now made $752.5 million worldwide, despite Aziz Ansari's pleas for people to not watch this movie.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes vs Transformers 4

Only one new movie hits theaters this weekend.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Hit Factor: Last one did well… Positive reviews (97% tomatometer)… Lackluster Summer box office.
Flop Factor: Lackluster Summer box office. I always forget the name of this movie (the "Planet of the Apes Dawn of the Return to Extinction from Smaug" or just the "Apes' movie").

Transformers Age of Extinction Conquers 4th of July Weekend

In what is expected to be the lowest 4th of July weekend at the movies in quite some time… Transformers 4 easily remained atop the box office as newcomers Tammy ($21.2 million), Deliver Us From Evil ($9.5 million), and Earth to Echo ($8.3 million) underwhelmed moviegoers.

Overseas, Transformers 4 continues to dominate as it crossed the $400 million mark and has yet to open in most of Europe and Latin America because of the World Cup.  Worldwide, it has grossed just over $575 million… and despite the worldwide dismal critique of the film, it has a good chance of being the first movie of 2014 to cross the $1 billion mark.

Tammy vs Earth to Echo vs Deliver Us From Evil vs Transformers 4

A bunch of new movies hit theaters this July 4th Weekend… each vying to dethrone Transformers: Age of Extinction from the top spot.

Tammy
Hit Factor: Melissa McCarthy
Flop Factor: A bit typecast now. 17% tomatometer doesn't help either (though, Transformers 4  defied bad reviews).

Earth to Echo
Hit Factor: The very first teaser trailer was awesome.
Flop Factor: Subsequent trailers revealed that it is E.T. meets Super 8 (Yes… I know Super 8 is just a scarier E.T.), but not as good.

Deliver Us From Evil
Hit Factor: Marketing makes it seem like it's the best review Horror film in a while.
Flop Factor: That isn't the case, when you look at the  33% tomato meter.
