American Sniper Easily Tops Second Weekend with $64 million

American Sniper earned $64.4 million this weekend for an easy first place finish.  It has so far grossed $200.1 million and will soon become the highest gross war movie ever, domestically (Saving Private Ryan's take is $216.5 million from 1998).  It's 28% drop from last weekend is stellar, and also the best hold for a movie that opened to over $85 million.  What seemed like a small sleeper film, will definitely be in the running for highest grossing movie of the year, at least domestically that is…

So you're saying American Sniper will be number one next weekend too?

Yes.

As for the new movies that came out… Well, let's just acknowledge the one movie that everyone is talking about (or actually isn't talking about)… Johnny Depp's Mortecai (I can't even spell it; it's Mortdecai). It opened to $4.1 million, which landed it a 9th place finish.  This would be all good and well except for the fact that it cost $60 million and has a slew of big actors attached.  Even Jennifer Lopez's flick The Boy Next Door made three times that amount, with a cost of about $4 million.  I guess another Pirates movie is happening.

That George Lucas animated movie, Strange Magic, flopped also.
