Clint Eastwood's latest film, American Sniper, crushed the box office this weekend with $90.2 million. It is the biggest opening for a film in January (last held by Ride Along, $41.5 million) and also the best of Clint Eastwood's career (previously held by Gran Torino, $29.5 million). It is also the second highest debut for a rated R movie… sitting just behind The Matrix Reloaded's $91.8 million.
So, I guess 2015 is off to a good start.
As for the other movies, The Wedding Ringer and Paddington, they did reasonably well ($21 million and $19.3 million, respectively). While Blackhat failed, with a $4 million debut against it's $70 million budget and starring Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the fact it's a Michael Mann film… Ouch!
