Hotel Transylvania 2 Spooked Kids For Box Office Win

Well, it seems Adam Sandler is still somewhat relevant as Hotel Transylvania 2 debuted to a September record of $47.5 million, beating previous record holder, Hotel Transylvania ($42.5 million).

Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway's The Intern, managed a solid $18.2 for second place. Everest is still holding strong ($13.1 million), but it's nationwide expansion to 3000 screens proved less than stellar compared to it's screen average last weekend.

Hotel Transylvania 2 vs The Intern vs Everest

A few new movies hit theaters this weekends as Everest expands.

Hotel Transylvania 2
Hit Factor: No other kid friendly movie at the box office.
Flop Factor: Not exactly Pixar or Dreamworks level excitement.

The Green Inferno
Hit Factor: Director Eli Roth has his small, but dedicated fan base.
Flop Factor: Competition from other films.

The Intern
Hit Factor: low budget
Flop Factor: Seems more of a "I'll watch it if it's playing on TV" kind of movie.

Everest
Hit Factor: Pulled huge numbers last weekend on only Imax screens.
Flop Factor: Will the expansion help make enough to off set it's big budget?

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Tops Black Mass for the Weekend

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials led the weekend ($30.3 million), even though it was just $2 million behind the first Maze Runner film which debuted last year.  Meanwhile, Johnny Depp's Black Mass took the number 2 spot ($23.3 million).

In other news, Everest managed to grab a 5th place finish with $7.5 million... despite only debuting in Imax, which accounted for about 545 screens.  In other words: a very strong debut.

A couple of new movies hit wide release this weekend.  Everest opens on Imax only screens and Captive opens in less than a thousand screens.

Hit Factor: Sequel to a film that was surprisingly entertaining.
Flop Factor: Reviews are so-so (49% Tomatometer).

Black Mass
Hit Factor: Johnny Depp's Oscar worthy performance.
Flop Factor: Director hasn't really directed a movie that appeals to a mass audience.

The Perfect Guy Edges Out The Visit

It looks like M. Night Shyamalan will have to wait a while more to reclaim the top of the box office as The Perfect Guy managed a strong $26.7 million to take the lead.  M. Night's movie The Visit debuted with $25.7 million, which is excellent considering it's budgeted around $5 million, and also considering his last film, After Earth, well, you know how that did.

In other news, Minions has surpassed Toy Story 3 worldwide ($1.080 billion) to become the 2nd highest grossing animated movie ever, behind Frozen ($1.274 billion).

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation is also still doing well, as it has just opened to $86 million in China, pushing it's worldwide total to $613 million.

War Room Edges Out Newcomers For Box Office Win

The faith based film took the top spot this Labor Day weekend ($9.4 million) as newcomers, A Walk in the Woods ($8.4 million) and The Transporter Refueled ($7.1 million) were low on fuel this weekend.

Despite such a big summer, this weekend marks the lowest box office weekend of the year.

Transporter Refueled vs A Walk In The Woods

Can Straight Outta Compton Top the Box Office for the fourth weekend in a row? A couple of new movies hit theaters in what could be the smallest weekend of the year.

Transporter Refueled
Hit Factor: The Jason Statham films seem to do well.
Flop Factor: For a franchise film, they sure skimmed on the marketing.

A Walk In The Woods
Hit Factor: Robert Redford is always great.
Flop Factor: But I have know idea what this movie is about.
