Star Wars: The Force Awakens Rings in 2016 Breaking New Records

Star Wars: The Force Awakens easily rang in the New Year at the top spot with $90.2 million with a total of $742.2 million domestically.  It should surpass Avatar's  $760.5 million fairly soon.  Worldwide, it's $1.54 billion (as of Monday) has surpassed Furious 7 ($1.52 billion) and The Avengers ($1.53 billion) to move into 4th place of all time.  This huge December Box office helped 2015 to become the biggest box office year ever with both domestic (hitting $11 billion) and worldwide ($38 billion).

There were other movies in theaters this past weekend, and Daddy's Home surprisingly held on strong to second place ($29.2 million).  Tarantino's The Hateful Eight pulled in a decent $15.7 million for third place. However, analysts were betting a bit higher since Django Unchained ($30.1 million) and Inglourious Basterds ($38.1 million) both debuted much much higher.
