Keanu vs Mother's Day vs Ratchet & Clank vs The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book eyes third weekend as a few new movies hit theaters before the early Summer juggernaut enters the arena.

Keanu
Hit Factor: Looks funny.
Flop Factor: Can Key and Peele's small screen antics cross over to the big screen?

Mother's Day
Hit Factor: Romantic Comedies based off of Holidays, did surprisingly well (Valentine's Day).
Flop Factor: What random holiday is next?

Ratchet & Clank
Hit Factor: If people have played the game, they'd get some of the jokes.
Flop Factor: Might be better as part of the videogame, than watching it in theaters.

The Jungle Books Easily Conquers Second Weekend with Huge $61 Milliion

This weekend's newcomer, The Huntsman: Winter's War ($20.1 million), was no match for The Jungle Book's ($60.8 million) strong word of mouth. It only dropped 41 percent from it's opening weekend, where most movies of that caliber usually drop at least 50 percent or more.  The Jungle Book has already grossed $191.5 million domestically and has a worldwide total of $528.5 million. It should have another strong weekend next weekend, before that other Disney movie hit's theaters the weekend after.

As for the The Huntsman: Winter's War, Universal must not be too happy as it's $20.1 million debut greatly trails it's predecessor, Snow White and the Huntsman ($56.2 million).

In other news(just so happens to be Disney again), Zootopia has passed the $900 million mark worldwide, and is the first movie of 2016 to do so.

The Huntsman: Winter's War vs The Jungle Book

Only one new movie opens in wide release this weekend.

The Huntsman: Winter's War
Hit Factor: Cast, prequel to a movie that did well.
Flop Factor: Early Reviews have been bad (15% Tomatometer) and will deter most people who were on the fence about watching this movie in theaters. Everyone is still talking about The Jungle Book.

The Jungle Book Crushes the Box Office with $103.6 Million

Families came out in droves to see Disney's live action take on the famous story, to easily take the top spot at the box office. It's $103.6 million debut makes it the second biggest of April, only behind Furious 7's $146.2 million debut last year.  It's global debut stands at $291 million.  With Zootopia and The Jungle Book putting up huge numbers this early in the year, Disney's 2016 looks to be very, very successful.

The Boss Edges Past Batman v Superman

Melissa McCarthy's foul mouthed comedy, The Boss, just barely took first place with $23.48 million while Batman v Superman had to settle for second ($23.44 million).  So, being so close, numbers could change tomorrow when the final tally comes out.

Batman v Superman is knocking on the $300 million door domestically, as it's set to cross that milestone either today or tomorrow. Even though it has already made $783.5 million worldwide, it will have a hard time crossing that $1 billion mark, as it's falling quite a bit week to week. As for Zootopia (who's also knocking on the $300 million door domestically), it's still holding strong with a third place finish of $14.4 million, bumping it's worldwide total to $852.5 million.

The Boss vs Hardcore Henry vs Batman v Superman

A couple of new movies could spoil Batman v Superman's wilting reign at the box office.

The Boss
Hit Factor: Melissa McCarthy
Flop Factor: Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy, Ghostbusters) has nothing to do with this film.

Hardcore Henry
Hit Factor: Interesting technical idea.
Flop Factor: Would people want to sit through an entire movie in first person POV?

Batman v Superman Takes Second Weekend with $52.4 Million

Despite dropping almost 70% from last weekend, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice easily dominated the box office in it's second weekend ($52.4 million).  It has already grossed $682.9 million worldwide.

The only wide release newcomer this week was God's Not Dead 2, which grossed a respectable $8.1 million vs it's $5 million reported budget.

Now to Deadpool, it is now the second highest grossing rated R movie ($355.1 million) domestically, behind only The Passion of the Christ ($370.8 million). However, with $749.9 million worldwide, it has surpassed The Matrix Reloaded's $742.1 million to become the highest grossing rated R movie worldwide.  Deadpool is also now the highest grossing X-Men movie, surpassing X-Men: Days of Future Past's $747.9 million worldwide take. Surprisingly, the only movie that isn't really about the X-Men.
