Star Trek Beyond Blasts Off with $59.6 Million Debut

The latest installment of the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek Beyond, easily beamed up the box office with $59.6 million. Although a tad behind Star Trek's $75.2 million and Into Darkness' $70.2 million, Beyond is off to a decent start.  However, it's going to need some serious legs and a strong overseas market to recoup it's reported $185 million budget.

The horror flick, Lights Out, managed a strong $21.6 million debut, which (right now) ties Ghostbusters' second weekend for 3rd place.  This also beats Ice Age: Collision Course, which had to settle for 5th with $21 million.  Collision Course's rather soft debut, is actually the lowest debut for the franchise... probably due to stiff competition from The Secret Life of Pets and Finding Dory... The 13% Tomatometer doesn't help either.  Worldwide, the franchise has always done well... In fact, it's already made $179 million overseas (since it's release ahead of North America) for a global total of $200 million.
