Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Nabs First Place with $28.5 Million Debut

The Tim Burton fantasy flick based off a novel, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (that's a mouthful), easily secured the top spot at the box office this weekend ($28.5 million).  It also made a $36.5 million overseas, for an early global total of $65 million.  It will need some legs as the movie reportedly cost around $110 million to make.

As for the Mark Wahlberg led, based off a true story pic, Deepwater Horizon, it opened to $20.6 million... good enough for a decent second place finish.  Like Peregrine's, this too will need to have some strong legs to catch up to it's reported budget of over $110 million... and, Deepwater Horizon has a higher hill to climb, since the story itself doesn't have as much of a global reach than the former.
