Rogue One Rings in the New Year with $49.5 million

For the third straight weekend in a row, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story took the top spot at the box office with $49.5 million, for a domestic total of $424.9 million (the second highest grossing movie of 2016, behind Disney's other property, the $486.3 million, Finding Dory).  Overseas, Rogue One has grossed $350 million for a worldwide total of $774.9 million, so far... putting it at number 8 worldwide for 2016, and could push for the $1 billion mark.

The number 2 film this weekend, Sing, held on so strong, that it actually gained an audience since last weekend ($42.8 million).  It has grossed $166.4 million so far domestically, and about $100 million overseas for a worldwide total of $262.9 million.

Despite getting ravaged by critics and having a weak opening, Passengers managed a strong hold for 3rd place ($16.2 million). It has so far made $61.5 million against it's reported $110 million budget.

With Rogue One and Sing dominating the year end line up, it helped 2016 to become the biggest box office year domestically, with $11.4 billion.  Yes, even beating 2015's huge $11.14 billion line up of Jurassic World, The Force Awakens, and Furious 7.

Also, it was no doubt, a huge win for Disney, as they raked in the top 4 highest grossing films of the year. With Rogue One still climbing, they, more than likely, will take the top 5.

Warner Bros, on the other hand, should have dominated, with high profile pics like Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and Fantastic Beasts... they didn't flop, they actually did well... but I just cant help but imagine how much more they would have made if they were actually good films. We will see what 2017 brings us.
