Split Remains at the Top Spot with $26.3 Million

M. Night Shyalmalan's Split, easily remained on top of the box office this weekend ($26.3 million).  In fact, it only dropped about 35% from last weekend, which is unusually good for a horror-type of flick.  It has grossed $78 million.

Newcomer, A Dog's Purpose, came in second with $18.4 million... which is actually more than I thought it would do, amidst the late controversy.  Other newcomer, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, came in 4th with $13.8 million, which is the lowest of the series.  However, it grossed $28.3 million overseas, where it will make most of it's money back.  It so far, has a worldwide total of $78.3 million.

As for the Matthew McConaughey starred film, Gold, it couldn't find any. Hah. At $3.5 million, it's actually one of McConaughey's lowest openings to date... and it is his lowest opening for a movie on more than 2 thousand screens. Which is weird because the buzz made it feel like it was only opening in limited release... I guess that was the problem.

In other news, La La Land jumped, thanks to the Academy bump and being on new screens. It has now grossed $106.5 million and $223.5 million worldwide. In fact, pretty much all the Oscar nominees received a bump.

In news from a galaxy far far away, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story became the second highest grossing film worldwide of 2016 with $1.030 billion.  It sits behind Captain America: Civil War ($1.153 billion). The top 5 worldwide movies of 2016 are all Disney (Captain America: Civil War, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Finding Dory, Zootopia, and The Jungle Book)... I wonder if that'll happen again in 2017.
