Split Scares Box Office with $40.2 Million

It looks like M. Night Shyamalan is back as the low budget thriller, Split, grossed $40.2 million for the top spot this weekend.  After a string of flops (The Happening, The Last Airbender, After Earth), Shyamalan has quietly been rebuilding his career with low-budget horror/thriller films, starting with 2015's The Visit, which grossed $98.5 million worldwide off of a $5 million budget.  It looks like he has found his stride.

As for the other movie in wide release, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, it's $20 million debut is far short of the original's $44.5 million back in 2002.  Paramount is definitely hoping for a strong international run.

In other news, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story passed the $1 billion mark worldwide.  It's an ear shot away of eclipsing Finding Dory and Zootopia to become the 2nd highest grossing film worldwide of 2016.
