Can Beauty and the Beast three-peat? A couple of new movies open in wide release this weekend.

Ghost in the Shell
Hit Factor: The anime is pretty cool... The Matrix was influenced by it.
Flop Factor: Could be great, but also easy to get it wrong.

Beauty and the Beast Remains Box Office Champ with $88 Million

Disney's live action remake of Beauty and the Beast easily held on to the top spot this weekend with $88.3 million.  Which is about a 49% drop from last weekend... a major hold for a movie with a gigantic debut.  It has already grossed $317 million domestically... and with it's worldwide total now standing at $690.3 million, Beauty and the Beast has now surpassed Logan ($566 million) to become the highest grossing movie of 2017 worldwide.  It will also most likely be the first film to cross the $1 billion mark this year.

Newcomer, Power Rangers managed a decent 2nd place finish with $40.5 million... and could prove a starting point for a franchise (we'll see next weekend, if it has any legs at all).

Other newcomers, Life ($12.6 million) and CHiPs ($7.6 million) kinda stumbled.

Also apparently, thanks to huge numbers from Logan, Kong: Skull Island, Beauty and the Beast, and to a lessor extent Power Rangers, March 2017 has become the first March in history to surpass the $1 billion mark in ticket sales.

Hit Factor: A scary movie in space with Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds.
Flop Factor: Wait it's not part of the Alien franchise? I'll wait.

Beauty and the Beast Dazzles with $170 Million Debut

Be our guest, be our guest.
Indeed!
Many were Disney's guest this weekend as the live-action telling of Beauty and the Beast crushed the competition with $170 million.  It has surpassed last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's $166 million debut to become the highest opening ever for March.  It also made $180 million overseas for a grand worldwide debut of $350 million.

A new beast shall reign over the box office this weekend as a live action remake of a Disney classic hits theaters.

Beauty and the Beast
Hit Factor: The animated film is beloved as one of Disney's best.
Flop Factor: Reviews are not great (but not bad either at 66% Tomatometer). Probably really expensive (edit: reported cost around $160 million).

The Belko Experiment
Hit Factor: Low-budget counter programming from the big movies out now.

Kong: Skull Island is King of the Box Office

Kong: Skull Island roared it's way to the top of the box office with $61 million... somewhat above of expectations.  The reported $185 million movie also made another $81.6 million overseas for a worldwide debut of $142.6 million.

Logan, last weeks number one, fell to number 2 with $37.9 million and so far has grossed $152.7 million domestically. Worldwide, it's gross raised to $438 million.  There is probably little doubt that Kong: Skull Island and Logan are chipping away at each other's audiences.

Only one new movie hits theaters in wide release this weekend.

Logan Tears up the Box Office with $85.3 million Debut

The final chapter in the Hugh Jackman Wolverine saga, Logan, easily clawed it's way to the top spot this weekend ($85.3 million).  Thus proving, along with Deadpool, that R rated comic book movies can do well. I think it's just an example of giving the right filmmakers carte blanche to make the stories they want to make (I said the right filmmakers).  If this number holds up, Logan would be the highest debuting Wolverine film... Though, not by much, as X-Men Origins: Wolverine made $85.06 million in it's debut.  Overseas, Logan made a big $152.5 million for a global bow of $237.8 million.

In other news, the horror flick Get Out, held on strong, only slipping about 20% (which is unheard of for a horror film), to $26.1 million... It has already made $76 million.

In somewhat surprising news, The Shack, opened to $16.1 million... which was much higher than expectations.

Logan vs The Shack vs vs Before I Fall vs Get Out

A few new movies hit theaters this weekend.

Logan
Hit Factor: Best reviewed Wolverine Movie (93% Tomatometer)... first rated R Wolverine too.
Flop Factor: It's R rating may deter some of the younger movie audience.
Photo:

The Shack
Hit Factor: Based off of a popular book.
Flop Factor: Despite the popularity of the book, the trailers look a bit generic.

Before I Fall
Hit Factor: Low budget?
Flop Factor: Lots of competition out right now... not much marketing.
