Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Tops Box Office with $62.2 million Debut

The 5th installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales ($62.2 million) easily took the top spot at the box offie this weekend.  This marks the lowest debut in the franchise, since the first film debuted in 2003 with $46.6 million.  That film went on to gross $305.4 million domestically, let's see if Dead Men Tell No Tales can reach that. Despite the franchise fatigue stateside... overseas is another story, as it grossed a big $208 million, bringing it's early worldwide total to $270.6 million.

As for the other newcomer this weekend, Baywatch, well... it's underperforming.  With a $18.1 million debut, this comes under expectations and even lower than the 4th weekend of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($19.9 million).  So yes in other words, Disney has the top two spots at the box office this Memorial Day weekend.

In other news, The Fate of the Furious now stands at $1.224 billion worldwide and should edge out Beauty and the Beast's $1.233 million to become the highest grossing movie worldwide of 2017.
