Wonder Woman Debuts to a Big $100.5 Million

The latest saga in the DC Universe, Wonder Woman, crushed the box office this weekend with a $100.5 million debut.  Though it is the lowest opening for the newly minted DC Universe (behind Man of Steel's $116.6 million opening), it is a much need critical win for the franchise, as the other films' less-than-impressive reviews cast major doubt on whether Warner Bros. could sustain their superhero universe.  Worldwide, Wonder Woman made $223 which is a good start for the Amazonian warrior.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales fell 66% domestically to third place, just behind Captain Underpants ($23.5 million).  At a $114.6 million domestic total, Dead Men Tell No Tales will probably end up being the lowest grossing of the franchise.  However, overseas, that is a different story, as it continues to do well and even challenged Wonder Woman in few markets, earning about $74 million. Bringing it's worldwide total to $501 million so far.
