Kingsman: The Golden Circle Takes Box Office Crown with $39 Million

In what's shaping up to be one of the biggest September's ever (after following one of the lowest August's in a while), Kingsman: The Golden Circle ($39 million) took the top spot away from It's third weekend ($30 million).  Kingsman 2 has also made $61 million overseas for an early grand total of $100.2 million.

It's $30 million second place finish has pushed it's domestic total to $266.3 million.  Which bests The Exorcist's $232.9 domestic take to become the highest grossing Horror film of all time.  Worldwide It has grossed $478 million.

As for LEGO's movie, The LEGO Ninjago Movie, it debuted somewhat under expectations at $21.2 million... probably mostly due to the fact that no one is really familiar with Ninjago, compared to their recent version's of Batman and the first LEGO movie.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle vs Ninjago vs Friend Request vs It

A few new movies hit theaters this weekend looking to scare It from the top spot.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Hit Factor: The first film was surprisingly entertaining.
Flop Factor: Buzz seems somewhat low for a big budget sequel.

It Scares Up $60 Million in it's Second Weekend

The Stephen King based movie about an evil clown lurking in the sewers easily dominated the box office for the second weekend in a row with $60 million.  It has already made $218.7 million and is on track to become the highest grossing Horror movie of all time (with only The Exorcist's $232.9 million standing on top).  It has also grossed $152.6 million overseas for a global worldwide total of $371.3 million.

American Assassin came in second with $14.8 million.
And unfortunately, Darren Aronofsky's mother! brought in a meager $7.5 million for 3rd place.  No doubt it was hurt by being released the weekend after It, but also the fact that it got decent reviews contrasted with the F Cinemascore it got. so yeah.

It Scares up Horror Record $117.2 Million

The Steven King based movie, It, easily trampled the competition ($117.2 million), setting a record for the biggest Horror movie opening and biggest September opening of all time. It also scores the second biggest 'R'rated debut, behind Deadpool's $132.4 million.

Interesting note; It's domestic take over this past weekend easily eclipsed the entire worldwide run of Stephen King's other novel-turned-to-movie, The Dark Tower... where it has grossed $107.3 million worldwide.

Hitman's Bodyguard Tops 3rd Weekend in a Row with measly $10.3 million

There's actually quite a bit of good news this weekend as there was no major movie release.  Movie attendance is a bit up from last weekend (so this weekend hasn't become the worst weekend in a long, long time). Yes, it's up, with no new movie in wide release. It's still a pretty bad weekend, however... and the worst Labor Day weekend since the 90s, but almost every movie in the top 20 gained.  Last weekend's number one, The Hitman's Bodyguard, slipped less than a percent.

Since it's a slow weekend, it helped smaller movies like the critically acclaimed, Wind River, gain 27% from last weekend for a third place finish.

In other news, I have to mention China's Wolf Warrior 2, where it has already made an unprecedented $812 million in the Middle Kingdom.  For a global haul of $815 million.  It is China's highest grossing film and also the second biggest showing in a single market, only behind Star Wars: The Force Awaken's $937 million domestic take.
