Night School vs Small Foot vs Hell Fest

A few new movies hit theaters this later September weekend.

Night School
Hit Factor: There hasn't been new a comedy in theaters for a while.
Flop Factor: Early, early, reviews aren't that great (23% Tomatometer)

Smallfoot
Hit Factor: Also, there hasn't been an animated family friendly film in a while.
Flop Factor: The marketing on this movie seems a bit low (though, I'm probably not the target audience).

Hell Fest
Hit Factor: Low budget, Halloween horror flick in time for Halloween.
Flop Factor: Another teen slasher flick.

House With A Clock In It's Walls Tops Box Office with $26.9 Million

The movie based on a famous book, The House With A Clock In It's Walls, easily topped the box office this weekend with $26.9 million.  The family friendly film easily bested predictions, which had it coming in a few million less.

In other news, The Nun, passed the $100 million mark as it grossed $10.3 million this weekend.  It is also still scaring up audiences overseas, as it has taken in another $35.4 million for a foreign total of $191.7 million and $292.6 million worldwide.

House with a Clock in It's Walls vs Life Itself vs Fahrenheit 11/9

A couple new films hit theaters this September weekend.

The House With A Clock In Its Walls
Hit Factor: A usually mellow month for competition
Flop Factor: With all it's CGI flair, it doesn't really move the needle.

Life Itself
Hit Factor: This Is Us the movie.
Flop Factor: A 12% Tomatometer doesn't really exude confidence.

Fahrenheit 11/9
Hit Factor: Director Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 movie did well. Also getting a decent 81% Tomatometer.
Flop Factor: His audiences have dwindled since Fahrenheit 9/11.

The Predator Snatches up $24 million to top Box Office

Fox's latest installment of their other "R" rated alien franchise, The Predator, easily took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $24 million.  This comes somewhat under expectations as most analysts had this film debuting in the $30-$40 million range.

Last weekend's number one, The Nun, dropped a steep 66% to 2nd place with $18.2 million.  So far, the $22 million pic has made $85.1 million domestically and $143.6 million overseas for a worldwide total of $228.7 million.

A Simple Favor ($16.1 million) rounded out the top 3.

In other news, Mission: Impossible - Fallout reaches another milestone as it is now the highest grossing of the franchise both domestically ($216.1 million) and overseas ($544.8 million); it surpassed MI2's domestic take of $215.4 million this weekend.

The Nun Scares up $53.5 million at the Box Office

The Conjuring spinoff, The Nun, debuted to the huge sum of $53.5 million... That's even bigger than the original The Conjuring ($41.9 million) movie it spun off from and the biggest debut of the franchise.  What's also impressive is that it crushed the overseas box office with $77.5 million for a worldwide debut of $131 million.  Add in the fact that this movie has terrible reviews (28% Tomatometer) and a 'C' Cinema Score, this movie avoided any bad buzz.

Crazy Rich Asians Easily Tops Labor Day weekend with $22.2 million

For the third weekend in a row, Crazy Rich Asians easily dominated the box office with $22.2 million (only a 10% drop from last weekend).  It has a domestic total of $111 million which makes it the highest grossing Rom-Com in quite some time (the Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds movie The Proposal made $164 million domestically back in 2009, peak Rom-Com days).

As for the newcomers, this weekend. It was rather lackluster as Operation Finale lead the pack in 4th place with $6 million, and the indie hit Searching did well in 5th with $5.7 million.

In other news, Tom Cruise's flick Mission: Impossible - Fallout dominated the overseas market with $89 million as it took in $77 million from China.  It has a foreign total of $342.3 million and $462 million worldwide.

Ant-Man and the Wasp's foreign total climbs to $381.4 million for a worldwide total of $594.9 million. This surpasses the first Ant-Man's worldwide take of $519.3 million.
