How to Train Your Dragon 3 Fires Up Box Office with $55.5 Million Debut

How to Train Your Dragon: Hidden World easily topped the box office with $55.5 million.  It is actually the highest debut of the franchise. It also added $34.7 million overseas for a foreign total of $216.9 million and a worldwide total of $274.9 million.

While Alita: Battle Angel is doing poorly domestically (down almost 57% to $12 million), it debuted in China to $62.3 million and had a foreign weekend of $94 million. It's foreign tally is $202.7 million and has a worldwide total of $263.4 million. It's still questionable if this reported $170 million budget film will see a profit.

Hit Factor: The last two Dragon films were good... Positive reviews (94% Tomatometer)
Flop Factor: Box office this year so far has been lackluster, especially for the tent pole films.

Fighting with My Family
Hit Factor: A drama that the Rock appears in... also pretty good reviews (93% Tomatometer)

Alita: Battle Angel Tops Box Office with $27.8 million Debut

The big budget film Alita: Battle Angel, easily took the top spot at the box office with $27.8 million. However, the film comes with a reported hefty budget of $170 million. So, it's going to need some serious legs. It made $56 million overseas for an early foreign total of $94.3 million. It's worldwide total stands at $130.9 million.

The LEGO Movie 2 came in a strong second ($21.2 million) but is pacing about less than half of what the original film did in 2014.

A bunch of new movies hit theaters this February weekend.

Happy Death Day 2U
Hit Factor: Sequel to the surprise hit movie.
Flop Factor: Not much, will probably easily recoup it's low budget.

The LEGO Movie 2 Tops Box Office with $34.4 Million

In an unexpectedly lower-than-expected debut, The LEGO Movie 2 managed to top the box office with $34.4 million. This is about half of the $69.1 million the first LEGO movie made in 2014. Ouch!  Overseas, it didn't fair as expected either as it grossed $18.2 million for global debut of $53.2 million.  It was beat overseas, by How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which took in $38.2 and so far has made $138.7 million ahead of it's domestic debut in a couple of weeks.

What Men Want ($19 million) and Cold Pursuit ($10.8 million) round out the top 3.

Glass Tops Box Office with $9.5 million

In what might be one of the lowest box office weekends in a while (being it Super Bowl weekend and all), Glass managed to stick it out in the top spot for the third weekend in a row with a lowly $9.5 million.  This is the first time in a long time that no movie hit the $10 million mark on a weekend.

The only newcomer this weekend was Miss Bala, which debuted to $6.7 million.
