Secret Life of Pets 2 Leads Weekend with $47.1 Million Debut

The top two newcomers to the box office easily underperformed this weekend: The Secret Life of Pets 2 ($47.1 million) and Dark Phoenix ($33 million). More on the second film later.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 $47.1 million take is substantially less than the $104.4 million opening the first film made a few years ago and will probably get no where near the $368.4 million domestic total of the original film.

Now onto the other clunker, Dark Phoenix. Oh X-Men, you reignited a new wave of the comic book era, but ended with a fizzle. Disney, must be thrilled to have this present from Fox.  At $33 million, it is the lowest opening for any X-Men related film... easily under achieving The Wolverine's $53.1 million from 6 years ago.  This doesn't bode well for the New Mutants film that's still in waiting to come out (?).  The plus side, is that Dark Phoenix opened to a strong $107 overseas for a worldwide total of $140 million.  That should help recoup some of its budget.

In other news, Avengers: Endgame inches up to $2.730 billion. Not sure if it'll surpass Avatar's $2.788 billion take, unless there is a magical last minute push.
